about

"Reflections of D" is the piano solo album of Michael Arbenz, where he reflects Duke Ellington's music in his very own way. On this album, he combines his musical curiosity with his diverse experiences with jazz and classical music.
The tracks are inspired by Ellington's musical universe, in which his composition and arrangement are synonymous with his piano playing. Michael Arbenz, who also works as a composer and arranger, uses these different perspectives to illuminate different levels of Ellington's music.
Michael gives Ellington's famous "Take the "A" Train" rich harmonies and turns "Reflections in D" into a free improvisation with an impressionistic flair. He also expands the sound spectrum of the piano with overdub techniques and electronic effects to create unique sounds, like the dazzling soundscape in "African Flower" and the groovy remix to "It Don't Mean a Thing". The album closes with the same piece Ellington usually closed his concerts with: "Lotus Blossom" by Billy Strayhorn.
Throughout “Reflections of D”, Michael uses his unique improvisation skill and perspectives as a pianist to bring Ellington to the now.
